A large ball of solid steel from a forgotten era sits on display after being unearthed in 2014 from a mountain of slag, the byproduct of 100 years of steel making on the former Sydney steel plant site. Portside Aggregates, the company now in control of a commercial operation to sell the recycled slag, mainly used for the construction of roads, claims its reserve is the largest on the eastern seaboard. © Steve Wadden
