2014. Young kids take a quick break during football practice on a field at the former Sydney steel plant site. This section of the remediated site, renamed Open Hearth Park, is now the home of green grass, playgrounds and sports fields. The remediation of the former Sydney steel plant site saw over 250 acres transformed during the government funded, 10-year, $400 million dollar project — going a long way to close the dark chapter on environmental controversy. The changes are hard to fathom when comparing the destruction and pollution present in 2005 with the Open Hearth Park of 2015. © Steve Wadden
